“The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” – Socrates
My late mentor, Van Carrigan, had a saying that still makes me smile.
“Life is full of ‘ahas’ and ‘oh shits.'”
Recently, while traveling abroad, I had one of those “aha” moments that stopped me in my tracks. It wasn’t about business, success, or entrepreneurship. It was about learning, specifically about why so few people ever discover their full potential.
In my book, LARGER THAN LIFE, In Pursuit of Discovering Your Full Potential, I devoted an entire principle to this idea because I’ve become convinced that one characteristic separates extraordinary achievers from everyone else more than almost any other:
They never stop being students.
A few weeks ago, I attended a webinar by Darren Hardy, bestselling author of The Compound Effect, The Entrepreneur Roller Coaster, and Living Your Best Year Ever.
For ninety minutes, Darren shared what he had learned after interviewing hundreds of the world’s highest achievers—including Richard Branson, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Michael Jordan, Warren Buffett, Tony Robbins, Jack Welch, and many others.
His conclusion surprised me. Although these remarkable individuals came from different industries, backgrounds, personalities, and life experiences, they consistently shared six characteristics:
- They think bigger than everyone else.
- They surround themselves with exceptional people.
- They possess an almost unbelievable work ethic.
- They focus relentlessly on the one thing that lights them up.
- They embrace failure.
- And perhaps most importantly, they are obsessed with learning.
Not because they have to. Because they understand something most people never do. The greatest limitation in life isn’t what you don’t know. It’s believing you already do.
The moment we become certain, we stop growing. When we believe we’ve figured out life, we stop asking better questions. Once we become experts, we quietly stop being students.
This reminds me of one of my favorite parables.
A young student traveled the planet in search of the secrets of the Universe. Along his journey, he became renowned as the greatest student who ever lived. After years of accumulating knowledge, he had only one more person to learn from, known as the wisest of wise men.
After finally meeting the Master, he spoke with confidence, saying, “Master, I am the greatest student who ever lived, and you are the wisest in history. I have come to learn from you so I, too, may know your wisdom.”
The Master smiled and said, “Please…sit. Let us have tea.”
As they sat together, the Master began pouring tea into the student’s cup. When the cup became full, he kept pouring. Hot tea spilled over the sides, onto the table, and into the student’s lap.
Finally, the student cried out, “Master! My cup is full! Please stop pouring the tea, as it is burning me.”
To which the Master gently replied, “Exactly. Your mind is just like this cup…already full. How can I pour anything new into it until you first empty it?”
What a profound lesson. Life constantly teaches us. Every challenge, setback, success, relationship, failure, disappointment, and victory is a classroom.
The question isn’t whether life is teaching; it’s whether we’re still learning.
I’ve discovered something else along the way. The Universe has an interesting way of testing us. When we learn the lesson, life moves us forward. When we don’t, it lovingly places us back into the same classroom—just wearing different clothes.
Different job, relationship, business, or challenge; same lesson. We repeat the pattern until we finally become humble enough to learn what life has been trying to teach us all along.
Maybe that’s why Socrates said, “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.”
The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know. Ironically, that realization has become one of the greatest sources of confidence in my life.
Because when your cup is never full, there is always room to grow, improve, and become. And that is where you’ll discover your full potential.
Keep your cup empty, your mind open, and keep learning. Always…
